My Opinion of "The Fault in Our Stars"
The Fault in our Stars, written by John Green, is a book about Hazel Lancaster, a 16-year-old girl with lung cancer who has been terminal for a large portion of her life. She doesn’t get out much, due to the portable oxygen tank she must use to breathe properly, but she reluctantly attends a cancer support group for her mother. However, Hazel’s life turns upside down one day at the support group when she sees someone she has never seen before, 16-year-old Augustus Waters, who had lost a leg to bone cancer a few years prior, and Hazel’s life undergoes a big change.
I haven’t finished this book yet (I’m about halfway through), but so far, I love it. The characters are well written, and you can tell how much thought the author put into writing the book. The book could technically fall under the romance category, which I don’t read much of, but the way that John Green has written how the two fall in love is interesting and it has been a while since I've seen romance in a book that has been this realistic. I also like how he doesn’t shove the fact that the two main characters have cancer in your face. Yes, this is mentioned a lot, but in a way that it would come up in a general conversation.
I would 100% recommend this book. It sometimes covers heavy topics, cancer, sometimes thoughts/mentions of death, and more, but the way Green has written it makes it incredibly interesting, while also giving some facts about cancers in a way I’ve never seen before: slipping the facts into the text subtly yet they are still there. Overall, I really enjoy this book and feel like people should read it.

I've heard of this book before, but I've never actually read. Your description of the book sounds really interesting, especially that the author can talk about cancer "in a way that it would come up in a general conversation". I'll have to check this book out soon!
ReplyDeleteOh no, this reminds me of my Bio paper that I did on lung cancer. But all jokes aside, this sounds like a really good book. I think my sister read this book and I'm deciding whether I should read it or not.
ReplyDeleteI watched the movie not too long ago and your post makes me want to read the book as well! The movie was so sad for me so I can't even imagine what the book is like. Nice post!
ReplyDeleteI read this book for the first time a couple years ago and at first I really enjoyed it but after reading some of Greens other books I was irritated by the way most of his characters are just copy and pastes of each-other. However, I do agree that I appreciate the way Green touched on cancer without glorifying it. Do you like the book better or worse now after finishing it and reading the ending.
